GEATOP has been involved since 2012 as part of the ITER project, the most ambitious and complicated nuclear fusion research project to date, considered the clean energy of the future.
The road to nuclear fusion is still long: the first ignition of Iter is expected in 2025, the experimentation of which will end in 2035 when 10 times more energy than that invested to start the fusion process itself will be obtained; the next step will be the construction, in 2050, of Demo, the last experimental reactor that will be built to definitively approach the construction of production reactors scheduled for the second half of the 21st century.
Also in Italy we are proceeding with experimentation in the field of nuclear fusion, through the construction of a mini reactor whose results will be decisive for the operation of Iter and Demo; this reactor, called “Dtt”, will be built in Frascati, and its design phase is currently underway.
Also in this case GEATOP is and will be in the front row, having been chosen, as a leading company in the field of metrology in the nuclear fusion field, for the realization of all the procedures and technical specifications concerning dimensional control.
The search for a new clean energy source is certainly essential, but GEATOP’s commitment is not limited to contributing to these ambitious projects; through its work, in fact, it provides support to industries operating in this sector, and not only, to reduce waste related to the manufacture of various components.
The metrological control applied from the very early stages of the project and throughout the production chain allows to reduce non-conformities and consequently the reworking that would produce waste, also in terms of energy.
Also, GEATOP is increasingly involved in automation projects, through which the risk of errors and waste is further reduced.
To demonstrate this, Andrea Pellegrino, technical director of GEATOP and head of the research and development department, and Luca Peruccio, Project Manager of GEATOP and project manager of the nuclear fusion sector, were invited by Hexagon to Las Vegas as part of the “Hexagon Live Global” international event to hold a conference in which they were able to illustrate some cases of automation application on the Iter project, fully capturing the spirit of the event organized by Hexagon whose commitment to the creation of an autonomous world capable of reducing the waste was confirmed by the president and CEO Ola Rollen in the introductory Keynote of the event.
Andrea Pellegrino and Luca Peruccio, representing GEATOP, thus had the opportunity to bring the name of Saluzzo to the United States, enjoying success for the technologically innovative nature of the solutions illustrated.

“THE BIG LIFT” as it is called is the first lifting that took place at the ITER construction site located in Cadarache – France of the first sector of the Vacuum Vessel (VV) that completes the first piece for the construction of an experimental reactor for nuclear fusion.
A highly complex handling that lasted more than a day and a half and allowed the first sector of the VV, with its 1,380 t, to arrive inside the Tokamak Pit.
We at GEATOP S.r.l., a company specialized in applied metrology and dimensional inspection and a partner of Ansaldo Nucleare, support the DYNAMIC group in the assembly of the Tokamak, and specifically for this important milestone we have teamed up with the ORYS company, working at the forefront of lifting and handling monitoring of this sector, using software and instrumentation up to the mark of this important achievement.
An extraordinary challenge for metrology in fact, thanks to the study carried out in the preliminary stage through virtual simulation, we were able to carry out the metrological control activity in the field through the use of more than 30 CatEyes and SMRs, detected simultaneously by three Leica Absolute Tracker AT960 LT #Hexagon Italy, obtaining a quality result in a short time.
Thanks to our know-how, we developed within the #SpatialAnalyzer measurement software a “bespoke software” that allowed us to drive the alignment to the final position of the sector, with a cycle time between measurement, analysis and displacement calculation, of less than 2 minutes.
The entire metrological control operation followed by the GEATOP group achieved a landing site positioning result below 0.1 mm and with a final Sector positioning error below ±0.5mm!

Friday 8 and Saturday 9 April was held the opening ceremony of the new metrology laboratory located in – Via Propanotto, 8 12037, Saluzzo (CN) –
High was the turnout of visitors and curious about what was hidden inside a state-of-the-art “CCR – Cleaning Condition Room”, a “CMM” coordinate measuring machine Global S Chrome 12.30.10.
This machine, designed by Pininfarina and belonging to Hexagon’s Enhanced Productivity Series (EPS) line, will allow us to carry out dimensional inspection and applied metrology activities at our premises, thus increasing our range of services that integrates what has been our core business for years, portable services – at the customer’s premises – with PCMM instrumentation.
Dimensional testing at controlled temperature and humidity to the accuracy of 2μ, this is what you can get from our laboratory metrology thanks to the commitment of all our Team followed in more than twenty years at the service of applied metrology.

Geatop srl, Hexagon’s partner for the measurement services, has been operating since 2008 in the context of topographic surveys, of the dimensional control and training.

GEATOP Metrology was ranked by “Il Sole24Ore” and “Statista” among the 450 italian companies “Leader della Crescita 2022”! This is an analysis of the business growth in the period 2017-2020, carried out taking in consideration more than 8000 companies which participated in this project. We are so proud! Since 2013 GEATOP S.r.l. has been working together with Westinghouse/Mangiarotti (Monfalcone – Italy) on the I.T.E.R. project, as far as metrology is concerned, to manufacture the Vacuum Vessel sectors.
It is also a pleasure for us to witness the completion of the first sector manufactured in a factory.
